Rooney Reveals Why

Wayne Rooney has today confirmed in statement that he wants to leave Old Trafford - due to lack of ambition. Rooney confirmed that he met with chairman David Gill last week and he wasn't very impressed with what he was being offered. To say the least.

Yesterday Rooney was keen to meet with Manager Alex Ferguson to hear what he had to say (or offer), but again the striker was not impressed.

Rooney, who has 18 months left on his contract said in a statement, "I met with David Gill [United Chief Executive] last week and he did not give me any of the assurances I was seeking about the future squad,"

Rooney went on to confirm. "I then told him that I would not be signing a new contract."

Speaking about his Manager's comments yesterday he said, "I was interested to hear what Sir Alex had to say yesterday and surprised by some of it."

He also added, "It is absolutely true, as he said, that my agent and I have had a number of meetings with the club about a new contract. During those meetings in August I asked for assurances about the continued ability of the club to attract the top players in the world.

"I have never had anything but complete respect for MUFC. How could I not have done given its fantastic history and especially the last six years in which I have been lucky to play a part?

"For me its all about winning trophies - as the club has always done under Sir Alex. Because of that I think the questions I was asking were justified."

Mourinho: Rooney will stay at United

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has dismissed speculation that Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney might leave the club after falling out with his boss Alex Ferguson. Much media speculation had suggested that Rooney wants to leave Old Trafford after rejecting signing an extension to his current deal as his contract is due to run out in 2012.

"I don't think he will leave. I think the big man (Ferguson) will persuade him to stay," Mourinho said.

There were reports that Rooney would join Real Madrid in January, but sporting director Jorge Valdano told Spanish television station Telemadrid.

"We have two marvellous players up front in Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain and they proved they were able to score 60 goals between them last season,"

"Mesut Ozil and Angel Di Maria will help... The question is who do we take out if Rooney comes? We have young players at the club with a lot to prove, such as Karim Benzema, and at best we are sorted out for the next 10 years."

But elsewhere for Real Madrid, Jose Mourinho has claimed that the Galacticos are close to signing European and World Cup winner Zinedine Zidane up to the coaching set-up at the Bernabeu.

"This seems to be too big for me to talk about, it's for the chairman to do," Mourinho said.

"When we've made a decision, we will make it known. But I feel that [Zidane] is close to being linked with the professional team.

"Zidane is part of the heritage of football and of Real Madrid. He should, I believe, be tied to football, tied to Real Madrid and he should be happy."
